Sleep Bruxism Treatment for Adults

Jaw grinding (Bruxism) Treatment London

If you frequently wake up with an aching jaw or a stiff neck, you may be suffering from jaw grinding or teeth grinding, a condition otherwise known as bruxism. Overtime, teeth grinding can lead to more complex problems and destroy dental enamel, causing long-lasting damage to the teeth as well as tension headaches.

If left unmanaged, teeth grinding can lead to orthodontic conditions such as malocclusion which affects teeth alignment, and the TMJ (the joint the connects your lower jaw to your skull) and can even change the appearance of the face.

Teeth grinding has a range of different causes, but it is often associated with anxiety attacks or stress, and it can occur while sleeping as well as during waking hours. The use of Botulinum Toxin (Botox®), has proven incredibly effective in minimising its effects. By treating the masseter muscle with a few precise injections, we can relax and shrink the muscle so that it reduces or stops tooth grinding altogether. The treatment can also be used slim the jaw, creating a softer curve to the jawline.

How does Botox work in this area?

Botulinum Toxin Botox® works by reducing extensive muscle activity, which temporarily eliminates the action of teeth grinding. It is safely administered, via an injection, into the masseter muscles (the two main chewing muscles located just behind the cheeks), weakening over-activity and effectively reducing bruxism and tension headaches. It takes up to two weeks to kick in, and the results last for up to six months before you’ll need to have a top-up. Although several other dental interventions can help treat bruxism, Botox is the fastest and most reliable way to alleviate pain quickly.

Is it painful?

You may experience some mild pain during treatment and common side effects include mild redness, soreness, and bruising at the injection sites which will improve over the following days.
