5 ways to improve skin dryness

Do you suffer from dry itchy skin? You’re not alone. Skin dryness is a common issue at this time of year. As the temperatures drop, and central heating kicks in, the skin’s natural protective barrier is damaged – and the result is coarse, cracked and sometimes painful skin.

But the good news is, there are things you can do to help. In the following blog, we explore five ways to treat dry skin and discuss the innovative dry skin treatments currently available here – at 23MD.

How can I get rid of my dry skin?

1. Avoid hot showers

A hot steamy shower feels great on a cold winter’s day. But it won’t do your dry skin any favours. Hot water strips the skin’s natural oils, removing its natural hydration and protective barrier. Therefore, it’s a good idea to dial down the temperature. Try to make sure the water stays below 38°C at all times and limit your time in the shower to a maximum of 5-10 minutes.

2. Moisturise regularly

Moisturising is an effective way to treat skin dryness and should be incorporated into your daily dry skin care routine. Creams and ointments (typically sold in a tub rather than a pump bottle) are particularly soothing for dry, cracked skin. Get into the habit of applying these creams after a shower, when the skin is slightly damp, and carry hand cream for use throughout the day.

3. Choose gentle skin care products

Some skin care products can be too harsh for dry skin. For example, soaps and shower gels that contain alcohol may dissolve the natural oils of the skin and fragranced products can cause additional itchiness and irritation. This is why you should always read the ingredients on the bottle before you buy. Choose simple products that will be kind to the skin and be as gentle as possible when cleansing.

4. Cover up the affected skin

Skin that is continuously exposed to the elements is more susceptible to dryness – which is why most people get dry skin on their face and hands. Of course, you can’t cover up your face when you’re out and about. But you can compensate by using additional moisturisers during the winter months. Simply wearing a hat, scarf and gloves can also make a huge difference.

5. Invest in dry skin treatments

Prevention is always better than cure. However, if you’re struggling with skin dryness, it may be time to invest in professional dry skin treatments – such as those available at 23MD. Our hydrating hyaluronic acid-based skin boosters are a fantastic way to restore moisture and suppleness to the skin. Naturally found in the body, hyaluronic acid has amazing hydrating properties and gives your skin the boost it needs – with softer, nourished skin apparent within just a few days.
