You may have tried every eye cream under the sun. You get eight hours of sleep a night. Perhaps you’ve even seen a doctor two. But no matter what you do, your dark circles and hollowness are still there. Dark circles are primarily genetic, but they can also appear due to fatigue, hyperpigmentation and seasonal allergies.
Add to this the way the fat pads beneath the skin shrink and the eye sockets enlarge, as they do in our forties when the bone in our skull starts to be reabsorbed, and the eye area starts to look either hollow or pouchy.
If hollowness or dark circles are a concern, there is one procedure you can try to minimise their appearance – hyaluronic acid fillers. But how do they work, and what should you expect in terms of results?
How do under-eye fillers work?
The leading cause of dark circles under the eyes is volume loss in the tear trough. Whilst skincare can undoubtedly help to brighten the area, there is absolutely nothing that it can do for the hollowness that comes as a result of ageing. By strategically placing small injections of hyaluronic acid dermal filler into the tear trough, we can counteract the hollowing, creating a smooth junction between the lower eyelid and the cheek.
How long do results last?
In this area, dermal fillers will last between six and twelve months, depending on the type of product used and your body’s metabolism. We usually recommend a follow-up appointment for top-up after six months to maintain the result.
How else can I reduce dark circles?
As well as hollows, dehydration and pigmentation are also common culprits of dark circles under the eye. Skincare products that contain ingredients such as caffeine, hyaluronic acid and tri-peptides or retinol, vitamin C, and vitamin K, which help stimulate cellular turnover to gently reduce the appearance of pigmentation and brighten the eye area. Vitamin C also helps build collagen, so there’s a separation between the veins and the skin, and hyaluronic acid plumps the skin to decrease transparency.
The Morpheus8 is an in-clinic treatment that combines radiofrequency and microneedling energy using small needles that produce tiny punctures in the skin to heat the lower layers. These tiny punctures prompt skin cells to kick into repair mode and prompt a lightening of dark circles.
