Ageing necks are more of an issue than ever before, thanks to a rise in technology. The majority of us spend hours a day looking down at our computer screens and phones, pushing our heads forwards and creasing the delicate skin that covers our necks. Lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity on the neck is an inevitable fact of life – the more that we age, the more elastin, fat, and bone we lose, and the less defined our jawline becomes. However, all that time spent looking down at a screen isn’t helping either.
We tend to be very good at taking care of the skin on our face, but when it comes to our neck and decolletage, they’re often left to go without. The skin on the neck and décolletage is very fragile as it produces less oil than the face, but it also often receives more sun exposure, so forgetting to apply SPF and neglecting to nourish it can result in premature ageing.
What is tech neck?
Tech neck is a term that’s used to describe the laxity of the neck skin that can occur from persistent folding of the skin from repetitive motion – like looking down at your phone or computer. The thin skin of the neck is very prone to wrinkling because the dermis is thin. This puts the neck at higher risk for showing age than other areas of the body.
As the neck is prone to developing signs laxity and wrinkles with age, the key to maintaining healthy, youthful skin in this area is to introduce treatments that stimulate the production of new collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin, resulting in firmer, smoother, more lifted and hydrated skin in the long run.
What treatments are available?
If you’re concerned about signs of ageing on the neck, or if you’d like to support the skin in this area to prevent ageing in the future, there are several effective treatment options to consider – options that don’t involve going under the knife.
Ultherapy
Ultherapy is the only FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment for lifting and tightening the skin on the face, neck, chin and brow and, more recently, for the improvement of lines and wrinkles on the décolletage. It uses ultrasound technology to gradually strengthen your skin from deep within.
The treatment delivers focused ultrasound energy to the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS). This is the deep layer of muscle typically addressed in a facelift. Using ultrasound imaging, the practitioner can position the device precisely where it needs to be – stimulating collagen production in the target areas without harming the surrounding tissue.
Morpheus
Morpheus8 is a fractitional skin treatment that combines radiofrequency micro-needling to stimulate collagen and provide a truly dramatic lifting and tightening to the face and neck. While you may see an initial lift, optimum results will be visible three months post-treatment.
Profhilo
Profhilo is a fantastic treatment for the neck. It will improve crepiness, tech neck and the neck contour itself. Necks tend to need more sessions than the face for best results. We usually recommend 2-3 sessions a month apart.
Laser
It encourages collagen and elastin fibre regeneration, which is key to contouring the area. The treatment requires little downtime and can be carried out over several months.
Daily sunscreen protection
Our neck and decolletage can be very vulnerable to sun damage, so keeping it protected with sunscreen is vital – even on cloudier days. Clothing often exposes the neck and chest to the sun, making these areas especially vulnerable. Wearing sunscreen is the single best step you can take to keep this area of your skin looking smooth and youthful for years to come.
