Can CoolSculpting get rid of belly fat?

If you’ve been considering fat freezing, the non-invasive medical treatment that targets stubborn pockets of fat on the body, you’re not alone. Google searches for the term ‘fat freezing’ have tripled in the last few years. And one of the few body contouring treatments that has stood the test of time is CoolSculpting, the FDA-approved device that promises to kill off around 20-30 per cent of the fat in the treated area and takes as little as just thirty-five minutes to perform.

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive fat reduction treatment that freezes fat cells to -11 degrees C, to permanently kill them without harming the surrounding tissues. The FDA approved the device in 2010 and has since gained so much attention that surgical fat removal procedures such as liposuction are barely spoken of anymore.

In the 1970s, American scientists first noticed how exposure to cold could reduce fat cells naturally and eliminate them from the body. Forty years on, the process of cryolipolysis (fat freezing) is effective on hard-to-shift fat that has proved resistant to diet and exercise, targeting key areas such as the stomach, abdomen, inner thighs, double chin, arms and underneath the buttocks.

How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting works by destroying fat cells to improve the definition, shape and smoothness of the body. It uses a technology known as cryolipolysis to apply controlled cooling safely onto the area you want to be treated causing the underlying fat to freeze and be destroyed.

Using a vacuum element that pulls the pocket of fat into the applicator to treat as much of the fat as possible, the area is then cooled to a precise temperature at which the fat cells crystallise and die. Over the following twelve weeks, the fat cells are eliminated naturally from the body – and once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

With no surgery and very minimal downtime, results typically take eight to twelve weeks to become visible.

What results can we achieve on the stomach?

The distribution of fat cells in our bodies is set during childhood and adolescence. For some, this leads to pockets of fat in adulthood that are more difficult to eliminate, no matter how much we diet or exercise. Excessive fat around the abdomen is a common concern for both men and women, especially as they approach and go through the ageing process.

When you attend a CoolSculpting consultation, your practitioner will assess your age, skin quality, how the area will appear after treatment, and how thick or pinchable the tissue is. If the area has dense or firm tissue, CoolSculpting likely won’t give you the best result.

Usually, it takes two to three treatments to achieve optimum results, which will be visible in the form of a 20-30 per cent fat reduction of the treated area. When targeting the stomach, you can expect to achieve mild-moderate fat reduction, an improved waistline and less bulging of the area.

As with all aesthetic procedures, be clear about why you’re interested in the treatment and how you would like to look and feel afterwards. Ask your practitioner about which options are most suitable and for a realistic idea of what can be achieved as well as a step-by-step breakdown of the treatment, so you fully understand the procedure.
