Photodynamic Therapy

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE?

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) combines light and a photosensitising chemical substance, producing molecular oxygen that kills damaged cells. It is proven to eliminate microbial cells including bacteria, fungi and viruses and is growing in popularity as an effective way to treat acne.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

At 23MD, we use a highly sophisticated photosensitiser containing 5% aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), which penetrates evenly into the top layer of the skin. Once absorbed, 5-ALA is activated by the Ellipse Nordyls Laser, which delivers specific wavelengths of light. The combination produces reactive oxygen that kills bacteria such as P. acnes, the strain that causes acne, and helps to minimise over-activity of oil-producing sebaceous glands.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Photodynamic Therapy may be suitable for patients suffering from active or inflammatory acne.

IS IT SAFE?

Yes; however, treatment must be carried out by a medical professional.

IS IT PAINFUL?

The treatment may cause a temporary stinging sensation as the light is applied, but it is not painful.

WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME?

Skin will feel sensitive immediately after treatment, and staying out of the sun is necessary for the next 48 hours. Mild swelling and a ‘sunburned’ sensation may occur, while peeling takes place approximately 3 – 4 days later.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

The technology is new; however, studies show a significant reduction in inflammatory acne following a course of 1 – 3 sessions.
