Pigmentation Treatment

Pigmentation Treatment in London

Pigmentation is a common skin concern that occurs in many forms: hyperpigmentation, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and Melasma. Whether triggered by excessive sun exposure, hereditary factors or hormones, pigmentation can be bothersome, resulting in an uneven skin tone and lack of radiance. Regardless of the cause, pigmentation is a difficult condition to treat for those who suffer from it.

What is the difference between each type of pigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation: Hyperpigmentation is typically the result of sun damage. Hyperpigmentation mainly affects the face and decolletage and appears as brown patches or small dark age spots that build up over the years.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: This occurs as a result of trauma to the skin so it’s particularly common in acne sufferers. Any inflammation can cause this issue, and the colour of the pigment left behind will vary depending on your complexion. In very fair skin, this type of pigmentation is usually red-toned, whereas in darker skin types, it tends to be brown.

Melasma: Melasma is a condition where the pigmentation forms in a butterfly-shaped ‘mask’ of colour across the face and is usually triggered by hormonal fluctuations. Melasma can be harder to treat than other forms of pigmentation, but with the right treatment approach, it can be improved.

What are the best pigmentation treatments?

At 23MD, Dr Kersh combines various modalities to treat skin affected by pigmentation. Sun damage and Melasma responds well to Laser treatment, which breaks down pigmented skin cells and also Mesoesthetic Peels®, which resurface the skin and trigger a controlled trauma at the skin’s surface, causing damaged skin to shed and fresh, unpigmented skin to emerge. Acne and rosacea can be reduced with Dermalux®, which uses LED lights to lessen inflammation and help heal. For maintenance, medical-grade facials such as Hydrafacial® help to resurface the skin regularly, while Microneedling helps to refine the skin and impart a healthy glow.
