Everything you should know about acne scars

Did you know, most people will experience acne at some point in their life? It is one of the most common skin conditions in the UK. Not only does it affect teenagers, but it can also appear in men and women throughout adulthood – leaving behind stubborn acne scars that are difficult to get rid of.

In the following blog, we answer some of your most frequently asked questions about acne scars and explore the range of acne scar treatments currently available here, at 23MD.

What causes acne scars?

Acne scars are caused by the body’s natural attempt to heal itself. When acne spots and lesions burst, the surrounding skin tissue becomes inflamed and damaged. Your body automatically tries to fix the damaged tissue by producing new collagen fibres – and this is where the problem lies. If too much collagen is created, the skin becomes raised and acne scars start to appear. By contrast, not enough collagen leads to pitting and indentation of the affected skin.

Will my acne scars fade over time?

This depends on the severity of the acne and the scarring. In most cases, mild acne scars will fade over time. However, if there are deep holes or depressions in the surface of the skin, it is likely that a cosmetic acne scar treatment will be needed to improve their appearance.

How can I get rid of acne scars?

Acne scars are stubborn and they can be tricky to get rid of. But there are a number of simple things you can do to improve their appearance, such as cleansing thoroughly and resisting the urge to pick at the affected skin.

Private clinics also offer numerous cosmetic treatments for acne scar removal. Here at 23MD, we have a range of medical and non-medical acne scar treatments to choose from – including chemical peels, specialised facialslaser treatment, phototherapy, dermaroller and more. If you want to diminish the appearance of your acne scars, such treatments are often the quickest and most effective way to do so.

Do cosmetic acne scar treatments work?

It is impossible to predict how your acne scars will respond to treatment. However, on average, most people notice a 50-75% improvement in the appearance of their scars – after pursuing some form of cosmetic treatment.

When visiting the 23MD acne clinic for the first time, we conduct an ‘acne assessment’, whereby we examine your skin and devise the best acne scar treatment for you. This could be a one-off session or a series of treatments over a 4-6 month period. Either way, we do everything in our power to maximise the effects of the treatment and ensure you are happy with the results.
